I’m always looking for smart, healthy and effective ways to help my smoking clients become nonsmokers. There is a lot of help out there for smokers who want to become nonsmokers and I give my clients all the information I can along with proven hypnotic techniques to help them be successful. During my research I came across a wonderful animated video from Quitsmoking.com called the Quit Smoking Time Line. It tells you all the positive things that begin to happen to your body within the first 20 minutes of your last smoke. I already provide my clients a hard copy of similar material in their smoking cessation folder when they book sessions with me, yet seeing the information in a cute informative cartoon was really great. I love the positive aspect of the video because smokers are already filled with fear and who wants to pay a hypnotherapist to fill them with more.
The site is packed with information for those who want to become nonsmokers and includes things like a Quit Smoking Tip Sheet, The 10 Stages of Quitting and information on Nicotine Patches, Nicotine Gum and Nicotine Lozenges. What they did not include on their site was hypnosis. What’s up with that? Then I thought let’s face it. That longstanding reputation for hypnosis is still out there. That old idea of helping clients become nonsmokers meant making them a mind reprogramming recording then sending them on their way. The good news is that the success rate for using only reprogramming along is about 30%. This is also the bad news and there are thousands of smoking cessation downloads and CDs purchased each year. When people use them in isolation of other hypnotherapy techniques and without guidance they may not be successful and therefore conclude that hypnosis doesn’t work.
After years of being a certified clinical hypnotherapist I know now that there are many aspects to smoking and they all need to be addressed in some way with different types of hypnosis protocols other than reprogramming. Many smokers need to be taken beyond the physical addiction aspect right to core belief stages and only after this is done is when reprogramming the mind as a nonsmoker will be effective. The client has to want to stop smoking. The spouse or partner cannot want this more than they do. And all parts of the client’s psychic has to want to stop smoking. Four to six sessions is what I recommend for smoking cessation and follow up after that if needed.
Most smokers need a program not just a CD. Smokers will have a higher success rate when they do more than just hypnosis. Hypnosis is highly effective, faster and easier when it is combined with other quitting methods like the ones found on Quitsmoking.com and in The American Cancer Society’s Guide to Quit Smoking, another information source I provide to clients. The material is helpful, practical and proven. The bottom line is you can’t just do one thing. It’s like weight loss. You have to eat better, exercise, and all parts of you has to want the same thing. Hypnosis helps you address all the parts of you and get them working together as a team.
If you are the hardcore gladiator who plans to quit smoking cold turkey then go with all your might. Just let everyone around you know that you are going to be slaying dragons in the pit of hell for few weeks and they need to stand by for fall out. Hypnosis can help you let go of the fear of quitting and get you through withdrawal symptoms with less discomfort to yourself and others. Hypnosis coupled practical techniques can improve your success rate to become now and forever a nonsmoker. Don't discount hypnosis. INCLUDE it. Go beyond a CD. Hire a certified clincial hypnotherapist to help you through this process. One that will help you commit to being a nonsmoker. Hypnosis works and you're worth it :-)
