Hypnosis and Weight Loss

According to the International Diabetes Foundation, “Diabetes and obesity are the biggest health challenges of the 21st century”. That’s a very sobering statement considering that the Dept. of Agriculture claims that 49 million Americans struggle to put food on the table. America is unquestionably “the land of plenty”, unfortunately when it comes to food we are “the land of plenty of the wrong kind”. Fast food has become a staple diet for many. How many of us love to go to the all-you-can-eat buffet or fall prey to the “supersize it for just a buck more” gimmick at most fast food joints.

Where is this leading us? Here are a few statistics from the CDC:

-37% of all adults are obese

-obesity related conditions include heart disease, stroke, insulin resistance, type II diabetes and

certain types of cancer

-on average medical spending for obese people is $1429.00 more per year than for normal

weight people

-most alarming: since 1980, obesity among children and adolescents has almost tripled

The weight loss products market is a multi-billion dollar industry in this country. Take a look in any grocery store or pharmacy vitamin section and you’ll find an entire area devoted to weight loss products all promising that if you buy their product you’ll look just like the anorexic model on the label. And be sure to read the warnings section of the label. Many of these products have significant side effects. However, ask a health care professional and they will tell you the only formula for losing weight is to decrease calories in while increasing calories out. The only way to do this is diet and exercise and that doesn’t come in a bottle.

So here is where hypnosis comes in. In a 1996 study by Irving Kirsch in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology meta-data was collected on a number of different weight loss studies. Some using diet and exercise alone and some using hypnosis along with diet and exercise. The study showed that when hypnosis was used as an adjunct to other weight loss protocols, the groups using hypnosis lost on average almost twice that of non-hypnosis groups.

Will hypnosis replace diet and exercise? No, however what hypnosis will do is change your attitude and your thoughts towards food. It also helps you break old eating habits and replace them with healthy ones. It causes you to remove the old negative thoughts and beliefs you hold about yourself and develop within you a new positive outlook.
